Fishbone Diagram

The Fishbone Diagram is a great tool that can answer two important questions:

  1. When you know something failed but you don’t know what caused it to fail, and
  2. When you have a problem source that is difficult to chase down.

This Diagram is also called the Cause and Effect Diagram for obvious reasons.

This Diagram does more than just point you to particular areas that may be the source of the problem. It gives you a wonderful overview of all the potential things that might affect your problem. You might be able to use this even without a problem.

The Fishbone Diagram starts with the problem statement. Then continues on with standard well thought out high-level areas. Next, under those, are specific industry categories. Lastly we add activities and that completes the Diagram.
