The Military Supply Chain is Broken

The military supply chain is broke. Firstly military suppliers are not precise. My niece works for a governmental agency that oversees military contracts. She says it’s lucky if they have a contract above 3 Sigma. In real terms 3 Sigma means 66,800 defects per million opportunities. Defects express themselves in two ways. You can easily remover Visual Defects. Consequently other defects are internal and fail at unpredictable times.

Therefore part of the blame is squarely on the shoulders of suppliers but some is also on the military. Above all a contract is between the military and the supplier. If I was the military I would keep slowly moving up the Sigma requirements until it got to a more reasonable level. A broken supply chain is fixable by the military.
